"We want to thank these people for their many years of commitment with this award or honor them for their success at a national or international sports championship," says District Administrator Christoph Gerwers. The ceremonial presentation of medals and certificates will take place for the first time in 2025. The persons to be honored must reside in the district of Kleve or have achieved their special achievement or merit in the district or at a sports club in the district of Kleve.

To this end, the district council has adopted a "Guideline on the award for special achievements and merits", which sets out the details for applying for the award. For example, "long-standing commitment" requires that the activity has been carried out for at least 20 years or has been carried out for at least 20 years.
All sports in which competitions are held at least at national level are eligible for the sports awards. For example, the athlete or team must have achieved at least 3rd place on the "podium" at a national championship. Or they must have taken part in the Olympic Games, World and European Championships or achieved a 1st to 6th place there. This also applies to achievements at the Paralympics, the Special Olympic World Games and other corresponding competitions at national and international level. The award can also be presented if the sporting foundations for this were laid in the district of Kleve. In the case of sporting honors, the corresponding placement should have been achieved in the years 2020 to 2024.
The professional associations and associations, the mayors of the municipalities in the district, the parliamentary parties and groups represented in the district council and the district administrator are entitled to make nominations. Sports clubs in the district of Kleve can also submit nominations for the sports awards. There is no legal entitlement to this honor from the district of Kleve. All details of the guidelines adopted by the district council and the online form for submitting applications are available on the Kleve district website(www.kreis-kleve.de / search term: Auszeichnung Sport und Ehrenamt).
