Modernization of the bike station access system and purchase of a locker system
Initial situation
The train station in the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer is the town's mobility hub. Citizen buses, bus lines, rail transport, cab ranks, car-sharing, cars and bicycles meet here and enable intermodal journeys. The direct proximity to the city center reinforces this effect. The station building from the 1930s and 1950s was modernized in 2009 and, among other things, the pilgrim arrival hall, which was no longer needed, was converted into a bicycle station. The demand for bicycle parking facilities around the station is constantly increasing, so the publicly accessible "Bike and Ride" parking facility is being expanded by around 200 spaces and the existing bicycle boxes are being modernized and digitized. The bike station with 240 parking spaces only meets today's usage requirements to a limited extent. Access is currently regulated with a card that must be purchased in advance. Furthermore, there are no options for locking up luggage.
Project objective
The utilization rate of the bike station is currently only around 30%, although the demand for secure parking facilities is constantly increasing. In order to increase the use of the bike station and meet the demand for secure parking facilities - without taking up new space - the access system is to be modernized and a locker system with charging facilities for bicycle batteries, which is not yet available, is to be procured.
Project background
Access cards have been identified as a problem for the underutilization of the bike station. A large number of cards have been issued and yet only around 30% of the station is used. The lack of charging facilities has also been addressed. The project modules were developed in a joint coordination process between the operator of the bike station and the city administration. The project is being implemented by the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer. The user group of the bike station will be enlarged by a digital access system, so that short-term users will also find an adequate offer. Lockers solve the problem of the lack of charging facilities. At the same time, the B+R station will be expanded and DeinRadSchloss boxes installed.
Financing of the project
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) as part of the directive to promote innovative projects to improve cycling in Germany with 75%.
The BMDV supports the planning and implementation of exemplary building and civil engineering measures with the "Guideline for the promotion of innovative projects to improve cycling in Germany". These are intended to promote the further development of cycling and ensure attractive and sustainable mobility.
The total project volume amounts to € 85,000.00. The funding amount is € 63,750.00, the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer's own contribution is € 21,250.
Schedule
The measure will be completed in the first half of 2025.
