Front garden competition
We are striving to make our city more insect-friendly. In this context, we are endeavoring to reduce the number of gravel and crushed stone gardens and convert them into flowering areas. Near-natural gardens are a low-maintenance alternative to gravel gardens. Many people will be amazed at how low-maintenance a near-natural garden can be. Conversely, "gravel gardens" are not necessarily low-maintenance, as plant material accumulates over the years with the wind and seeds begin to germinate. Then you get annoyed by the "weeds". In a heavily overgrown garden, on the other hand, the "weeds" hardly matter! Skilful planting helps to ensure that "weeds" have a hard time and are pushed back. The choice of plants depends on the location - a plant that is native to the area and suits the existing soil and climate will naturally have an easier time than an exotic plant.
Front garden competition 2024
In order to encourage a rethink towards more natural and insect-friendly (front) gardens, the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer and the beekeeping association for Kevelaer and the surrounding area are once again calling for a competition in 2024.
Citizens who already have an insect-friendly front garden can apply for the most insect-friendly front garden in Kevelaer until August 31, 2024. All you need to do is send an email to umweltschutz@kevelaer.de with your address, two photos and a brief description of your front garden.
